Cleaning window blinds and shades

Are window blinds really difficult to clean? Or are you just not following the best way to do it as the pros do? Cleaning blinds may seem simple, but they have smaller pieces that attract dirt and dust that are often neglected. In order to achieve optimum cleaning, you have to be familiar with the different methods of cleaning window blinds. Cleaning like a pro requires systematic cleaning that isn’t just about maintaining the beauty of your blinds. It’s much more than that. Find out the best way to clean your window blinds like a pro. We have collected the ways that work best without having to perform complex cleaning techniques.

How often do you need to clean blinds

Whatever material your blinds are, a weekly clean is a must. It is also advisable to dust your blinds at least once a month. The frequency of cleaning your blinds actually depends on the amount of dust exposure that your home takes in every day. Keep in mind, however, that excessive cleaning may lead to unnecessary staining and even damage. If you have wood blinds, make sure to consult a professional window specialist when any other issues occur in cleaning as wood is more sensitive to moisture and wet cleaning solutions.

What you’ll need

This list is not exclusive, and you can add more to it as long as it works best for you. Here’s a brief list of the things that you will need to start cleaning your blinds:

  • A vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment
  • Non-abrasive or soft sponge
  • Water and a small bucket
  • Liquid dish soap with no harsh chemicals
  • Microfiber cloth

Best way to clean blinds

Here are the best yet simple ways to clean your blinds like a professional:

  • First, vacuum the blinds. Once you have a vacuum with a brush attachment, start by vacuuming the blinds using the brush to avoid scratching the slats. Make sure that the brush is soft enough not to dent the slats. For best results, close the slats all the way in one direction as you vacuum.
  • Cleaning does not stop in vacuuming. After vacuuming, look for spot marks and dirt buildup that may need extra cleaning or wiping. Use a damp and non-abrasive sponge. To avoid more unnecessary spots, gently dry the slats with a clean microfiber cloth
  • If you plan to have a thorough cleaning,  first vacuum the blinds to remove as much dirt as possible. Fill a bathtub or a large container with warm water and a few drops of mild dishwashing soap. Begin by submerging the blinds in the water. Let the blinds sit in the water for about an hour or more. Afterwards, rinse blinds with clean warm water. For wood blinds, a towel-dry will do. Keep in mind that wood blinds are sensitive to water and moisture. If you want to know about properly cleaning wood blinds and faux wood blinds, find out here

Additional tips

Here are some additional tips that you need to keep your window blind clean for a long time:

  • Don’t use wood spray cleaner on wood blinds as well as faux. While it is called “wood spray cleaner”, it does more harm than good. The chemicals it has may cause a sticky build-up that can attract more dust faster.
  • Add a bit of vinegar and water. Vinegar and water are best known for giving cleaner results than just mere dusting off. For quick cleaning, add a bit of vinegar and water for effective results.
  • Don’t forget to clean and remove the dust from hidden places. We usually neglect the fact that dust and dirt also accumulate in hard-to-reach areas such as the header of your blinds. In cleaning your blinds, make sure that you also pay attention to the headers as well as the frames of your windows.
