Skylights and angled windows can absolutely be covered — the trick is that gravity stops helping, so the product has to hold itself in place. The workhorses are cellular shades running in side tracks (which also happen to be the best insulators for a hole in your ceiling), motorized shades for anything out of reach, and custom-shaped california shutters for angled and triangular windows where a permanent, fitted look wins. Here's what actually works for each situation, what doesn't, and the honest trade-offs.
A standard blind or shade is a gravity machine: it hangs, it stacks, it stays put because down is down. Tilt the window and everything breaks — a shade on a sloped skylight would sag away from the glass, slats on an angled window would hang past the frame, and a raised blind has nowhere natural to rest. So coverings for skylights and angled glass need one of three things: tracks that hold the fabric to the plane of the window, rigid construction that doesn't care about gravity, or a custom shape that fills the actual geometry of the frame. All three exist, and all three are made-to-measure products — which is why this is custom territory, not big-box territory.
For a sloped or flat skylight, the standard answer is a cellular/honeycomb shade running in aluminum side tracks. The tracks hold the shade flat against the glass at any angle, and you can stop it anywhere along its travel. Cellular is the right fabric for the job for a second reason: skylights are the leakiest thermal spot in most ceilings — heat pours out through them on BC winter nights and pours in on summer afternoons. The trapped-air cells that make cellular shades the best insulators in our lineup matter more on a skylight than on any vertical window in the house.
Options worth weighing:
Most skylights, and most tall angled windows, live exactly where hands don't. Somfy motorization solves the whole category: battery-powered motors retrofit cleanly (no wiring through the ceiling), remotes and app control move one shade or all of them, and automation earns its keep here more than anywhere else in the house. A skylight shade that closes automatically on summer afternoons and opens after sunset does real thermal work with zero attention from you. Battery packs on skylight shades typically recharge once or twice a year — a small price for never balancing on a stair landing with a telescopic pole.
If you're building or renovating and know skylights are coming, run power to them during framing; hardwired motors remove even the recharge chore. If the drywall is already closed, batteries do the job.
The dramatic top-of-the-wall glass in vaulted rooms — trapezoids, triangles, extreme angles — calls for a different approach: cover the shape with something built to the shape.
Sometimes the honest recommendation for a small, high triangle is a solar film-free alternative entirely — a fixed light-filtering shade — or nothing at all, if the window exists to show off sky and doesn't create glare or heat problems. We'll tell you when covering a window would cost more than it gives back.
Arched windows follow the same logic as angles: custom-shaped shutters with sunburst or fitted panels handle them beautifully, and fixed cellular fans cover them affordably. If the arch sits above a rectangular window, the everyday move is covering the rectangle for privacy and leaving the arch open for light — geometry working for you instead of against you.
A rectangular window forgives a small measuring error; a trapezoid does not.
